Physician- Dr. Ron Grisanti is a board certified chiropractic
orthopedist with a master's degree in nutritional science from
the University of Bridgeport. He is past chairman of the South Carolina
Chiropractic Peer Review and serves on the South Carolina Chiropractic
Investigative Committee.
His 26 years of clinical practice has positioned him as an

How the Modules are Broken Down
Module 1 - Assessment and Treatment of the
Digestive System and
Gastrointestinal
Dysfunction
 Physiology
of the Digestive Tract- We'll discuss the structures of
the digestive tract and how it evolved to function. We'll show
how the health of the gut is so incredibly important for the overall
health of the body.
Dysfunctions of the GI- We'll take a look at how
the GI becomes imbalanced and the effects this has on human physiology
and the emergence of the symptoms of GI dysfunction: acid reflux,
abdominal pain, heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation etc.
Assessing the GI Tract- We'll introduce the concept
of first line testing and how this can be used to assess
the GI health of your patients. We'll be discussing the complex interactions
between the GI and other systems of the body and introduce powerful
2nd line testing to uncover the true cause of the problems.
Patient-Specific Treatments- We'll present treatment protocols based
on the assessments you will be performing in your clinic. treatments
will focus on reducing inflammation, healing gut irritation and permeability,
restoring microflora, optimizing absorption, and modulating the immune
reaction. |
Module 2 - Inflammation and
Immune Dysfunction
 Physiology
of the Immune System- In this module we'll be building
on what we learned in module 1 by examining more closely the role
the gut plays in inflammation and immune imbalances. We'll be looking
at the normal physiology of the immune response and look at factors
that can cause inflammation and the emergence of chronic disease.
Triggers for Immune Imbalance and Inflammation- In
this section we'll be examining the many triggers and mediators of
the immune system including the role played by nutrient deficiencies,
hyperpermeability of the gut, and pharmaceutical drugs. We'll also
take a look at the role inflammation plays in atherosclerosis and
auto-immune disease.
Assessing the Underlying Cause of Immune Imbalance and Inflammation- We'll
be paying particular attention to the first and second line tests
that can help us assess the many different manifestations of immune
and inflammatory imbalances: the role of GI mucosa, nutritional deficiencies,
liver toxicity and gut associated lymphatic tissue.
Patient-Specific Treatments- Treatment will be
focusing on ways to treat immune imbalances and inflammation without
shutting down symptoms. Treatment will focus on restoring function
to the body and will not be limited to nutritional intervention,
diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification. |
Module 3 - Oxidative Stress, Blood Sugar Regulation,
and Energy Production
 Physiology
and Biochemistry of Energy Production This module will
focus on understanding how the body evolved to metabolize glucose,fats
and proteins to produce energy and understanding the consequences
of dysregulation in this system. You will get an insight into
the causes of the growing diabetes and obesity epidemic. We'll
look at the inter-relationship between the liver, the pancreas,
and the adrenal glands in the regulation of biochemical energy.
Assessing the Underlying Cause of Blood Sugar
Dysregulation and the Problems of Insulin Dysregulation and Oxidative
Stress- The early
assessment of blood sugar dysregulation is essential for the prevention
of diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease
and we'll be looking at the best ways to do this using symptom
analysis, blood chemistry analysis, and advanced functional diagnostic
labs. We'll also discuss ways to assess for oxidative stress to
prevent the end organ damage caused by uncontrolled blood sugar
levels and other dysfunctions associated with oxidative stress.
Patient-Specific Treatments- Treatment will focus
on the prevention of blood sugar dysregulation and the damage caused
by oxidative stress. |
Module 4 - Detoxification and the Liver
 Physiology
and Biochemistry of the liver- In this section we will
look at the role the liver plays in detoxifying the toxins we are
exposed to in our environment. We will discuss in depth the 2 phases
of liver detoxification and relate problems in either of these
areas to symptoms and dysfunctions commonly seen in practice. We'll
also discuss the role the intestines play in the detoxification
and elimination of toxins.
Assessing the Liver's Detoxification Capacity- Using
first line and second line diagnostic tools you will have the opportunity
to assess an individual patient's detoxification ability and
toxic burden. You will also be taught the best methods of evaluating
the presence of toxic elements such as heavy metals.
Treatment Options- Treatment of liver detoxification
problems will center around removing the source of the exposure,
reducing the toxin in the body, and strengthening the body with
appropriate supportive nutrients. We will be presenting a programof
in-office detoxification during this module.

Module 5 - Stress, the Thyroid, the Adrenals, and
Hormonal Imbalance
 Understanding
the physiology of the stress response and pituitary-adrenal-thyroid
axis- We will be looking closely at the relationship
between the thyroid and the adrenal glands in terms of regulating
metabolic energy.
Functional Assessment and Treatment- We will look
at the most effective ways to assess for low energy states in the
body using first line tests and advanced functional diagnostic tests
such as the adrenal stress index. We will devote plenty of time to
understand the thyroid panel on a blood test and ways to identify
and assess sub-clinical hypothyroidism and adrenal dysfunction. |

Question: Can I use your online training program
for my CEU requirements?
Answer: Yes. We are in the process of securing
CEU hours on a state by state basis. We will be posting this
information over the next few weeks. Go ahead and sign up

Question: What's the time required to complete
the course? When does it start?
Answer: Functional Medicine University
opens its doors the 2nd week of July, 2007. The training
program will take 5 months to complete. We will be starting
in the second week of July and continue for 5 months presenting
one module a month. We have not identified which days we
will be using for our webinar sessions. You will receive
details of that after you register. Remember, all of the
cals and webinars willbe recorded so you canmiss one and
not miss a whole section. All the handouts etc. will be available
from the training site.

Question: I live overseas. Can I take part in
the program?
Answer: Yes, The live training webinars
will most likely be taking place in the evenings
US time (probably 6:00 PM West Coast Time), which
would mean that people in Europe would have to stay
up to 2:00 AM! At present we are planning on doing
these once a month but there may be times during
the training when we want to do more of these as
needed. The teleconference bridge line company we
will be using allows international callers to participate
in the call. Any caller who can dial a US telephone
number is able to access our service and participate
in free conference calls. I recommend that you check
with your phone company to make sure you have the
cheapest rates for calling the US or get a calling
card to allow you to do this. All of our calls will
be recorded and made available on our training site
if you don't want to participate in the live
calls/webinars. We will try an arrange our coaching
calls to take place at a reasonable time for our
UK participants.
Question: I currently own a number of Dr. Weatherby's
books, which are being offered as bonuses. Will I get
a refund for the books I already own?
